NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Duke senior attackman Joe Robertson scored with 57 seconds left in overtime to lift the No. 2 seed Blue Devils to a thrilling 10-9 victory over 12th-ranked Loyola in the NCAA men's lacrosse quarterfinals at Arlotta Stadium Sunday afternoon. Robertson finished the day with three goals and an assist.
The victory launches the Blue Devils into the NCAA semifinals for the 13th time in program history and for the 11th time under head coach John Danowski. Championship Weekend will be held in East Hartford, Conn., May 29-31 at Rentschler Field.
Duke trailed Loyola 9-8 after Kevin Lindley netted his second of the day to set up the thrilling ending. Evan James led all Loyola scorers with four goals and an assist.
Freshman Brennan O'Neill registered four goals and an assist on the afternoon, including the tying goal on man up with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter. Michael Sowers had one goal and three assists, including the pass to O'Neill on the tying score.
After O'Neill scored the tying goal, sophomore longstick midfielder Tyler Carpenter made a fantastic play to collect the ground ball and gave Duke the ball with the chance to win in regulation. Loyola goaltender Sam Shafer made his 17th save of the afternoon to send the game into overtime.
Duke rookie faceoff specialist Jake Naso won the faceoff to start overtime and got into the box for the Blue Devils to call a timeout. Sowers got a look at goal, but a defensive effort from the Greyhounds forced the turnover to give Loyola the opportunity for the win.
However, it was Carpenter's pole again that came up big as the Durham, N.C., native intercepted a pass with 1:46 left on the clock. The Blue Devils cleared and with no timeouts relied on the veterans on the field to make a play.
Carpenter finished his spectacular day with five ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist.
Robertson got the ball in his stick, and like he's done so many times, he turned the corner and bounced a shot past Shafer for the win. It was Robertson's third overtime goal of this season and the fourth of his career as he also tallied the overtime winner against Notre Dame in the 2019 NCAA quarterfinal game.
Overall, the game featured three lead changes and six ties. Duke freshman Aidan Danenza registered his first NCAA Tournament goal when he gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead.
Naso was excellent yet again from the faceoff dot, winning 14-of-22 and picking up nine ground balls. JT Giles-Harris helped anchor the defensive effort, including holding Loyola scoreless for 22:22, collecting two ground balls and three caused turnovers.
In goal, Mike Adler made eight saves, collected two ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Blue Devils advance to play the winner between Maryland and Notre Dame, May 29.
Notes
JT Giles-Harris tied Luke Duprey's Duke caused turnover record, forcing three turnovers to push his career total to eight.
Michael Sowers moved into sole possession of second place on the NCAA all-time scoring charts with 381 career points.
Sowers now has 225 career assists, six away from tying the NCAA career record held by Loyola's Pat Spencer.
Joe Robertson now has scored at least two goals in nine NCAA Tournament games, one of three Blue Devils in program history to do so. Max Quinzani and Jordan Wolf are the other two.
